Step 1: Assemble Your Crank & Chain Ring
My bike had a fairly regular single speed conversion kit for mountain bike triple crankset, As we were changing to single speed convert, we only require a single chainring at the front. We found a dual crankset from an old yacht & removed the largest chainring. To undo the chainring bolts, you require a 5-mm Allen key & another tool to hold the back of the chainring bolt. If you have not got a chainring bolt tool, you can use a large flat-bladed screwdriver.
As we lifted the large chainring we had to interval out the chainring nails with parts so they would stretch properly. We also moved the chainring to the outer of the crank spider as we understood it would support the Chain-Line in the Long-Run.
Step 2: Installing the Bottom Bracket
We are using a sealed cartridge base bracket, so you will require to search a separate Instructable if you have got an old adjusted adjustable bottom bracket! We kept our old base bracket from when we undressed the bike, it was knackered, but we covered it & followed it with a new one the same size. Make sure you grease the threads on the bottom bracket as this area of a bike gets a lot of damage & can often know if not well lubricated. You need a support bracket spline tool to install the support bracket, do not try & do it without this machine as you won’t work!
Slowly thread in the right-hand side of the support bracket into your body taking care not to cross-thread. Regularly inspect from the left-hand side through the base bracket hole in the body to make sure it’s working in true. Fully tighten the right-hand side using the Spline-Tool & a proper spanner. Install the left-hand side of the support bracket using the same technique, but recognise, this is a normal right-hand thread
Step 3: Installing Cranks
Start with the right-hand crank which has the chainring. Grease the base bracket spindle before placing the crank. The rod is the piece holding out dual sides of the support bracket. Our bottom bracket & cranks are the conservative tapered type. There are other kinds of bottom bracket & cranks but the process is very similar.
Push the right-hand crank on to the shaft. As we are installing new cranks on this bike there’s a chance that the crank or the chainring might rub on the body.
If your crank does not clear your body, you will either require to search a different crankset or install a wider base bracket. Grease the strings on your crank-bolts & wind it into the shaft. Using an 8-mm Allen key bind the crank-bolt. Install the left-hand crank using the same process. Crank-bolts require to be very close. It’s one of the few items on a bike where you require to provide it as much welly as you prison!
Step 4: Installing Pedals
We are reusing the levers from the first bike. When we were the axle & gave the levers a spin they seemed a bit rigid so whilst keeping the pedal from the axis we released some heavy-oil down into the blocks & gave them a good turn which served free them up
The other revers thread on a bike is the Left-Hand Pedal! Look closely & your levers will be marked “R” & “L”. Turn the pedals into the characters by hand. It’s very easy to cross-thread the Steel-Pedals in the Alloy-Cranks so be accurate. Then fully contract the pedals with a Pedal-Spanner. A Pedal-Spanner is a unique bike tool which is a thin 15-mm Spanner. The pedals want to be nice & tight.
Step 5: Installing The Single Speed Conversion Kit
We are reusing the old mountain bike tires. Our back wheel is a freehub as exposed to a freewheel. Free-Hub rear tires have the wheel mechanism connected to the hub, whilst a Free-Wheel has the wheel mechanism connected with the sprockets. It’s possible to buy a Single Speed Convert Free-Wheel if you own that kind of back wheel.
